iceberg lovesong

this is our destiny:
you will swallow me.

frozen and stoic,
impervious to your wild thrashing currents,
i rise above your inky depths in the midnight sky, flash like a diamond.

liquid silver -
you race past,
blind to the northern lights that crown our nights with a dancing diadem.

i yearn to understand your constant churning,
the pleasure you forever find in pushing and pulling away from yourself.

oh! but i am glad you so seldom seek to rest...

your gentle grace as you glide across my face sends shivers to my core.
and when you are feeling foul, beating against me with all your might,
your rage reminds me why i am here.

ever your eternal witness,
i stopped long ago to marvel at your many moods.

now i cannot leave your cool, murky embrace.
i will stay until time melts me away,
sinking more with each new moon,
dissolving daily into your frenzied swirling.

and when at last you have completely consumed me,
i will know the secret of your ceaseless surge.

finally!

i knew this was inevitable! barbara hulanicki, aka the genius behind the original biba, has just finished designing a collection for topshop. can't wait to see it! here's a brief write-up from telegraph magazine:

"Designed by Barbara Hulanicki of Biba fame, Topshop’s new designer collection includes body-con dresses and palazzo pants plastered with supersize animal prints; wide-leg catsuits with cutaway shoulders (a Hulanicki trademark), cute, printed silk chiffon blouses and three-quarter-sleeve suede jackets. Given that this is the woman behind the cult label largely considered to have defined the Swinging Sixties and louche Seventies, the collection looks set to rock the late Noughties. Barbara Hulanicki’s 20-piece collection will be available nationwide from April 20. Prices from £20-£120"

favorite songs of 2008

these are the songs i've had on repeat all year...

11. paper route gangstaz - "alabama"
these guys are from my hometown of huntsville, alabama, and though this isn't their best track, it makes me nostalgic. and they reverse "alabama" to "i'm a balla," and that makes me smile.

10. invisible conga people - "cable dazed"
spooky dark dance track. my husband likes to dance with our cats to this one...

9. portishead - "the rip"
in my thoughts I have bled for the riddles I've been fed. another lie moves over...
i raved about the new portishead album when it first came out (click here to see that post, which includes a live version of "the rip"). this is still one of my favorite tracks from the record. and this might just be my favorite video from 2008.

8. fleet foxes - "white winter hymnal"
my other favorite song of theirs is "tiger mountain peasant song." since i already posted an amazing rendition of that one a few months back, i'll put this one here. how could you not love it? the vocal harmonies are just plain irresistible.

7. the tallest man on earth - "where do my bluebird fly"
swedish dylan? this guy is great... i highly recommend shallow grave.

6. the walkmen - "in the new year"
i've never really been a big fan of this band, and though i still haven't heard all of you & me yet, i'm impressed with the few songs i have heard. especially this one.

5. she & him - "i was made for you"
zooey rocks. so does m. ward. so does their album. especially this song!

4. goldmund - "threnody" (mp3 via raven sings the blues)
the malady of elegance is the perfect soundtrack for writing. sparse and haunting.

3. lau nau - "painovoimaa, valoa"
she's finnish, and she makes the dreamiest music out of pretty sounds.

2. beach house - "astronaut" (mp3 via nasty panda)
everything they do is perfection. this is my favorite track off their second album.

1. grouper - "heavy water/i'd rather be sleeping" (mp3 via nasty panda)
far and away my favorite song of 2008. favorite album too. shimmering, hazy, murky, and dark. like lullabies for deep sea mermaids...
